Method
Oz rare cars shows how many cars and light vans are still registered in Australia. It’s not sales figures and not a valuation.
What “still registered” means
Our numbers come from BITRE’s Road Vehicles Australia figures. They count vehicles registered for normal road use on one day: 31 January 2025. So “still registered” means it was on the register that day. It doesn’t mean sold this month, scrapped yesterday, or how many were ever built.
Cars registered for normal road use as at 31 Jan 2025. Club-plated, defence and diplomatic vehicles usually aren’t counted.
Australia-wide count vs state bars
The big “About” number is the Australia-wide count for that make, model and year on 31 January 2025. The state bars come from a separate set of figures, so small numbers may not add up to that number. Don’t read them as a split of it.
The year-by-year chart and newer cars
The “Still registered, year by year” chart follows the same make, model and year of manufacture each January from 2021 to 2025. Each dot is an “About” count on that date. It isn’t new sales that year.
If a car was made close to the count date, the line often climbs steeply. For example, a 2024 car might show a tiny count (or none) in earlier years and a much bigger one in January 2025. That’s normal. Those cars were still being registered as that year’s models reached the road.
So a steep climb for a recent year isn’t a mistake on Oz rare cars, and it doesn’t mean the older counts were wrong. Keep that in mind for cars only a year or two old.
Very small numbers
To protect privacy, BITRE hides counts under 3 and adjusts other small ones. So Oz rare cars always says “About”. We never treat a hidden count as exactly one car, and we don’t show how rare a car is when the number is too small to trust.
Obvious mistakes in the data
Now and then the data lists a make with a model that doesn’t exist, like a Toyota “Commodore” (that’s a Holden). We leave these out of search, and their page shows “not found”. We never remove a whole make.

Not a valuation
Registration counts aren’t a market value, an insurance value or buying advice. Charts and fuel-fill estimates are only a rough guide.
