About these numbers

How rare is your car? We count cars still registered on Aussie roads, not cars sold.

Where the numbers come from

The numbers come from BITRE, the Australian Government’s transport statistics office. Each January it publishes how many cars and light vans are registered for normal road use, based on state and territory records. Our main counts are from 31 January 2025. The year-by-year charts also use January 2021 to 2024. Older figures can be corrected later, so treat them as a guide.

Very small numbers

To protect privacy, BITRE hides counts under 3 and rounds other small ones. So we say “about” instead of giving an exact number. We never say “only 1 left”, and we don’t call a car extinct just because the count shows 0. When a number is too small to compare fairly, we don’t show how rare it is.

Year of manufacture

The year is when the car was made, as shown on its registration. That isn’t always the year it went on sale. A car imported second-hand can be listed under a different year.

Cars registered for normal road use as at 31 Jan 2025. Club-plated, defence and diplomatic vehicles usually aren’t counted.

How rare

“Rarer than X% of other 1994 vehicles” means we compared this car with everything else made in the same year that’s still registered. It doesn’t tell you what a car is worth or how collectable it is. If there aren’t enough other cars from that year to compare, we don’t show it.

Year by year

The chart follows one make, model and year across each January, so you can see how many are still around over time. If a year is missing, the chart leaves a gap rather than showing zero. The big number is always the latest count (31 January 2025). The chart shows how that number has changed, not new sales each year.

States, fuel and colour

The state bars come from a separate set of figures. For common cars they match the main count closely, but small numbers can differ. They also don’t tell you which suburb or postcode a car is in. Fuel type is for the year you picked when it’s available, and otherwise covers all years of that model. Colour is Victoria only, because there’s no national colour data.

Fill costs

Fill-cost estimates use nearby pump prices from public fuel-price feeds, refreshed about every hour. Your postcode or location is only used to find nearby stations and isn’t stored. Tank sizes are a typical size for the body style — change it if you know yours.

Search and pages we leave out

When the same model is spelled two ways, we combine them into one page. A few entries are clearly mistakes, like a make paired with another brand’s model name. We leave those out of search, and their page shows “not found”. We never remove a whole make.
